George Washington Campus (GWC)
The George Washington Campus (GWC) is a bold redevelopment of the historic George Washington Trade School, serving as the anchor of a two-site, mission-driven housing innovation hub in Detroit. The campus will provide local residents with advanced training in modular construction, on-site workforce housing, and the delivery of 60 new smart duplexes along Mead Street—physically and economically connecting Banglatown to the Joe Louis Greenway.
At the heart of the initiative is a simple but powerful model for economic mobility: Train → Fabricate → Build → Own. At the GWC factory, trainees will fabricate modular kitchen and bath pods, which will then be shipped to the MOD ZRO facility for final volumetric assembly. Trainees will “live in and learn,” earning competitive wages while gaining hands-on construction experience in a supportive, real-world environment, offering them a safe, stable foundation for financial independence.
The ultimate goal is to equip Detroiters with the skills, opportunities, and pathway to homeownership within the very neighborhoods they help rebuild. This initiative directly aligns with the Joe Louis Greenway Framework Plan goal of expanding homeownership and building generational wealth for current residents. Rooted in Detroit’s industrial heritage, the George Washington Campus will forge the city’s next housing frontier—smart, attainable, and community-driven homeownership at scale.
